President Trump Let McCabe Steer the Ship Home

Now that James Comey is a done deal the question now is what should Donald Trump do next? The obvious answer is to replace James Comey with the most qualified person to be found. For the sake and sanity of the nation there’s another course President Trump has to take.

While the firing of James Comey was a necessity it struck a nerve with America, not because of the greatness of Comey but because it took us back to a hurtful time. A time when an American President had a group of burglars on the White House payroll. A time when an American President used the IRS and the FBI to harass American citizens.

A time when an American President tried to use his Presidential authority to stop the People, Congress and the Courts from denying him tyrannical rule. Watergate was a hurtful time for America, but the comparisons of President Trump firing Comey to the “Saturday night massacre” is a false narrative.

Comparing Trump to Nixon fake news

When President Nixon ordered his Attorney General Elliott Richardson to fire independent Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox, he was attempting to directly shut down Prosecutor Cox’s investigation into his abuse of power. Atty. Gen. Richardson a man of integrity refused as did his second in command Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus, Nixon fired both on the spot hence the massacre. The third man in command Solicitor General of the United States, Robert Bork finally did the dirty deed.

President Nixon was attempting to literally stop the entire investigation by firing Cox. It would have meant that not only would Cox go away, but the whole group of investigators would cease investigating. Donald Trump firing Comey will not cause the same thing to happen.

It’s the equivalent of a person cutting all their hair off to create a bald head. The hair is gone but the head is still attached to the body and continuing to function. President Trump firing Comey merely cut the supervisor (hair) of the investigation (head) not stopped the investigation from functioning. The Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee Comey’s dismissal will have no effect on the Russia investigation.

The investigation will not stop because Comey is no longer FBI Director, unfortunately because of the way President Trump handled the firing of Comey questions of intent and issues of trust have been raised.

FBI trauma requires one of their own to boost morale

In order to allay these genuine concerns President Trump should announce that he will name current Acting FBI Director McCabe as the new permanent Director. McCabe as second in command to Comey was the guy running day to day operations of the FBI, meaning he was closer to the Russia investigation action than Comey was.

He clearly would not be considered a Trump loyalist. Therefore he is in the best position to render a doubt-free no Trump collusion with the Russians verdict, if the President is as innocent as he claims.

It would also reinforce the reason for removing Comey was for cause and not for political advantage.

McCabe has worked his way up through the ranks of the FBI his loyalty is to the Bureau not to any political cause or politician. Having one of their own at this time as opposed to an outsider would be good for the morale of the Bureau. At the very least President Trump should announce that McCabe will remain Acting Director until the Russian investigations are complete.

Naming McCabe Director would be the first step to restoring calm and would assure everyone that the current Russian investigation will continue, free to proceed wherever the facts lead even if that means to Trump Tower.
